Better a 5K than No Race at All

We got down to Maryland earlier today (around 4:30 in the morning) and my legs were still cramped from the car ride and my back was sore from sleeping for a couple of hours on the couch, so I headed to Baker Park and went for a short run. I mapped out a 3-mile loop and taped the map to the back of my iPhone. On one hand it felt nice to be out running in new unfamiliar territory, but on the other hand, it was difficult for me because all along the course were reminders of the marathon that was going on this weekend — the marathon that I was SUPPOSED to be running in. NO PARKING placards were posted every 25 feet along the course.

I started near the lake and ran up the hill to Hood College (an appalling lack of co-ed eye candy I must say). I ran past Frederick Memorial Hospital, and turned right on North Bentz, heading back down hill. When I got back to Baker Park, I ran along Carroll Creek on the far side of the park before looping back to the Jeep.

I stopped for a while afterwards and watched as a dad tried to teach his son how to hit in the batting cages. I was enjoying the “apple pie nostalgia moment” until the old man pegged the kid right in the left hip. Water sprayed from my nose.

Good times.
