So, those of you who have been reading my blog have no doubt noticed that lately I have not been running that much. This has taken a toll on my psyche and has made me feel like a big fat blob. At the advice of my physical therapist, I sat out the Wachusett Deer Run cross country race that I was looking forward to very much and decided kind of last minute to add the run that I am doing this coming Saturday. But, that still doesn’t address the fact that I have not been putting in the miles lately and I’m loathe to wonder how badly I am going to feel come race day. So, I set out today not only to see how badly my leg was going to hurt from running, but to see how much my cardio fitness has suffered as a result of my being hobbled. The short version is that my leg was F’ing killing me by the end of the run, but that my heart and lungs didn’t feel that badly. I ran at a respectable training pace of 8:22 and never felt winded. When I got home though, I could barely make it up the stairs, despite pre-medicating with Tylenol, Motrin AND Aleve 1 hour before my run. I’m still doing the 5-miler on Saturday and I’m looking forward to it very much.
UPDATE: 11/7/08 - I just got off the phone with my best friend Justin and found out that he and his wife are also doing the race. On the health front, I have a nasty head/chest cold. My left nostril is completely swollen shut and I coughed up some scary looking stuff in the shower this morning, but I don’t care. I’m still doing the race.
