Today was my first post-race run and I wanted to do something challenging. I also wanted to punish mysef a little bit for the good deal of over-indulgence I partook in over the weekend. After Saturday’s race we played host for some out of town friends. I acted like a tourist myself. Way too much food and lots of eating out. To make matters worse, Saturday night I went to a friend’s birthday bash and enjoyed more than my fair share of Sam Adams Octoberfest, Bud Light (Beer Pong junk beer), and a few Jagermeister shots. Not exactly straight from the pages of “An Idiots Guide to Training Nutrition” to say the least.
My next race is in two weeks and the one after that is an 8.6 miler cross country so it’s time to start upping the mileage. So, with that in mind I planned today’s run. I had to return the rental car this morning and on the map, the rental agency is a little over 8 miles away. Perfect! Only problem is that in just a one mile section (between mile 6 and 7) of that 8 mile trek, there is almost 400 feet of ascent. Ouch.
It ended up not being that bad. I felt better than I expected. My breathing was good, but my muscles just seemed tired - too much alcohol this weekend. I made a deal with myself that I could slow the pace as much as I needed on the hill but I would not stop running. No walking allowed. I kept my promise and felt great when I made it over the final crest. Tomorrow is an off day and I’m hoping to do some tempo training on the bike trail on Wednesday.
